Teenager Who Can Sometimes Be Persuaded to Fold Shirts

  • Originally from Lyme, NH, Jill grew up hanging out in her family’s hardware store. The store was a hub for the Lyme community replete with electrical and plumbing supplies as well as an old fashioned lunch counter. Customers could plop down onto spinning red barstools and enjoy a cup of coffee or breakfast while having a quick chat with neighbors before work. Jill’s grandmother was a kindred creative person who baked fresh pies daily for customers to enjoy (she made a darned good pie). Her grandfather was a through-and-through entrepreneur. Values of honestly and hard work were engrained in Jill from a young age. She graduated Hanover High School in 1992, played varsity basketball all four years of high school and participated in track and field in the spring. She attended the University of Vermont as a Diatetics major and In her 20s she worked in the Upper Valley at places like Duke’s Art & Frame supplies, Lou’s Restaurant & Bakery and Patrick Henry’s Restaurant.

After 3.5 years at the University of Vermont Jill pivoted and moved to Portland, OR where she stayed for 7+ years. This was an adventure of a lifetime, initially knowing no-one, and coming to love Portland down to the marrow of her bones. She worked as a hostess at Jake’s in downtown Portland and then as a managing supervisor at Red Star Tavern and Roast House under Michelin Star winning Executive Chef Mauro Pando. She was accepted to the Pacific Northwest College of Art and graduated Magna Cum Laude with a focus in oil painting in 2003. It is at PNCA as well as the Oregon College of Art and Craft that she learned sculpting, printmaking, photography and graphic arts as well as fabric dyeing and printing. Her first employment upon graduating was with Michael Curry Designs in Scappoose, Oregon where she worked as an artist to create and repair puppets such as those featured in the Lion King on Broadway and the Opening Olympic Ceremonies in Atlanta, Georgia.

As a new mom Jill returned to NH after an unexpected death in the family. For several years she was a dedicated at-home mom and at-home creative baker and hobbyist. Eventually she returned to work creating her own screen printing business “from scratch.”

Jill is married with two sons and lives and works in what was once her grandparents home in Lyme. She enjoys animals, road and mountain biking, pilates and perennial gardening.

While working with the staple t-shirt, Jill brings a wealth capability and experience to every project.

Upper Valley Screen Printing’s story begins here…

2016: The First Print

Nestled within the rolling hills of Lyme, NH a little print shop was born in October 2016. Founder, Jill, sewed a tote for a friend who owns Scavenger Gallery in White River Junction, VT. Using a single halogen lightbulb and pre-coated & unframed sheets of silkscreen, Jill was able to print the Scavenger Gallery logo.

2016: The Original Shop

With the intention of brushing-up on her screen printing knowledge, Jill attended a “screen printing class” in Long Island, NY.  However, it was not the “art class” she expected…!  It was an intensive weekend of instruction customized for individuals who wanted to enter the field of apparel decoration.  While attending class, employees of the teacher/shop owner printed 2000 sweatshirts.  This comprehensive and eye-opening trip inspired Jill to go into business.

The basement of their home was converted into screen printing shop, and In 2016 “Upper Valley Screen Printing & Embroidery LLC” was established in the State of New Hampshire.

Upper Valley Screen Printing is a cottage industry.  Our kids are witnessing each stage of growth—from the dream to an automatic screen printing press resembling a space ship in the garage!   They are learning new skills and seeing first-hand what can be accomplished with vision, daring, cooperation and hard work.  Screen printing is a predominantly a male-owned and operated business.  Valley Screen Printing is proud not only be exemplify entrepreneurialism for their children, but also to be one of many women-owned small businesses rocking it in the Upper Valley!

2021: “A Garage Shop on Steroids”!

In 2021 Upper Valley Screen Printing moved to the family’s two-car garage to accommodate a state of the art automatic printing press from Austria. The press allows us to produce top-quality printed garments in record time. This home-based business is a brightly lit shop filled with carefully curated equipment. Here, we take items like t-shirts and turn them into desirable and valuable assets for your brand. When you work with Upper Valley Screen Printing you are supporting a small business within a local community. The money we earn, we are going to put in the local bank and spend at the local hardware store and restaurants. Our taxes will go to the local schools and roadways. We believe in supporting the Upper Valley of New Hampshire and Vermont as well as the U.S. economy would be honored for the opportunity to work with you.
